Case Study: Noise (A Musical)

Access Consultant Residency

For the experimental queer musical Noise, which premiered in Summer 2023 at Northern Stage Regional Theater in Vermont, I consulted on the creative components of designing accessibility for an immersive theater piece.

Some different aspects of accessibility that I integrated into this process:

o   Organized accessible seating and low-scent seating

o   Created a know-before-you-go packet that increases access for neurodivergent individuals and anyone who may benefit from having more information up-front

o   Built a roving accessibility station that traveled through the audience, providing sensory access kits, snacks, blankets, and information

o   Worked with the set and costume designers to provide tactile models of set and costumes

o   Developed meet-your-seat pre-show tours

o   Advised on relaxed performance practices

o   Worked with front-of-house staff on interacting with disabled audiences

o   Created quiet areas for actors and audiences

o   Connected with ASL interpreters and a superscript specialist

o   Consulted on language in the script

o   Addressed emerging access needs among the cast, reflecting on rehearsal practices, and coordinated follow-up care
